Hi there, everyone! I have a new video again this week, and it includes some tips on self-care. Because like they say on the planes, we need to secure our own masks before assisting others. And these days, we can take that message literally- by staying the course and wearing our masks, continuing to social distance, and being considerate of others. And yes, that includes treating everyone as equals. Black Lives Matter.
And one of the things I mentioned in the video was about the bunnies! Just like the power line notice of “Call before you dig!”, before you work on your yard and garden, check before you dig. Here’s why!
So over Memorial Day weekend, I discovered these little guys had been born recently in my planter. Unfortunately, I didn’t know they were in there when I was gardening and had started digging with my spade. I dug straight into their hutch! They’re okay, but I was traumatized! And because of the pandemic and the holiday, nobody I was calling was answering. I didn’t know what to do!
Fortunately, one of my landlord clients had called me about something else, and I figured he might know. And he sure did! Mostly, I was concerned I hadn’t put them back right and that they weren’t getting enough air. But, he said they’d be fine, and that mom would come back for them later, probably relocating them.
She visited me in the yard first…
I feel like she gave me a Bunny Tongue Lashing haha. But then she went over to the planter and started nursing them. She visits every day at dusk and at dawn, and I have been checking on them every day in between.
I’m posting this so others can learn from my mistake. It turns out bunnies having their babies in planters is a common thing, and it makes sense, too. First off, it’s safer than in the ground; they have a barrier from snakes, hawks, and coyotes (which we get around here!), plus it’s less chance of flooding. Also, the soil is often more aerated than the ground, so my concern about them getting enough air really wasn’t. And, just like a people-mom, Bunny Moms want to have a tasty snack nearby while they nurse.
