Surprise! I’m talking about Union Stock Yards Gate<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine trucks driving through the center, and laborers coming and going through the smaller gates to each side, while Sherman the Bull eerily looked on…<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\n

In the not so distant past, Chicago was well-known for meat packing and distribution, and notoriously so. Tourists used to visit the stock yards<\/a> to watch the efficiency of the animal slaughter. To accommodate both laborers and visitors, commuter train stops were added, in addition to the box car rails that were in use for shipment. It’s still a large industrial area, so tracks are still operable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides the food safety laws <\/a>that were result of Upton Sinclair’s take<\/a>, labor laws<\/a> many folks take for granted were spurred here. In addition, fires were common, including a famous one that, up until 9\/11, was the deadliest building collapse in U.S. history<\/a>. That tragedy included the loss of 21 firefighters.

It is for these reasons and more I felt September was deserving of this month’s trivia in order to highlight these integral points of Chicago’s history.

Bridgeport<\/a> and New City<\/a> are two official Chicago neighborhoods where the majority of the stock yards workers resided. Next to Bridgeport is Armour Square<\/a>, where the Chicago White Sox<\/a> call home. New City includes Back of the Yards<\/a> and Canaryville<\/a>– the latter made famous by the hit Showtime series Shameless<\/a><\/em>. (Seasons 1-10 are currently available on Netflix!)

“Shameless” side post:
I admire the grit, tenacity, and the creativity of the Gallagher family and neighbors V and Kev, though of course their choices often result in even more relatable dramedy. I sometimes hate myself for laughing so much! Which, it’s why I had to get my Gallagher House selfie<\/a>!

BTW: The Gallagher’s home TV address, 2119 N. Wallace, is obviously “fake news” to any Chicagoan, since no south side address would have a N (north) direction<\/a>. But, 2119 S.<\/strong><\/em> Wallace would be correct if it existed. That would be north of Archer: The northern-most intersection of where Wallace starts. And even if the address existed, it still wouldn’t be right, since it would be located in the wrong neighborhood (by Chinatown). Canaryville is further south.
