Surprise! I’m talking about the Chicago River<\/a> itself! (You thought I was talking about the bridge, didn’t ya?) Besides the skyline, the river, and it’s moving bridges, is a big part of Chicago’s identity. It’s famously dyed green every year for St. Patrick’s Day<\/a>, and the “Chicago bricks” are sourced from its clay<\/a>. Even the Municipal Device<\/a> is designed around it.

However, folks like me who grew up in the city are aware of its problems, too. When I was a kid, I was told to never go in the river, because it was like swimming in a toilet. Sadly, that was a fair comparison once upon a time. But the folks with Friends of the Chicago River<\/a> are changing that, and they’ve made a lot of headway!

“Since 1979, Friends has been working to improve the health of the Chicago River system for the benefit of people, plants and animals; and by doing so, has laid the foundation for the river to be a beautiful, continuous, and easily accessible corridor of open space in the Chicago region.<\/em>“

If you are available, Chicago River Day<\/a> is an annual clean-up day they host – just a few weeks away! You don’t have to live in the city to be connected to the river – the north fork is all the way up by me! In fact, a cleanup location is pretty much in my back yard<\/a>.
