…Bring May flowers (and plants!)

With Mother’s Day just a few days away, some folks are scrambling for just the right gift. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but maybe you want to give the caregiver in your life something that’s longer-lasting than cut flowers and that shows you put some thought into it. Maybe planted flowers or plants would do the trick!

What I have pictured is something I got for myself for our first house. Nothing fancy, but it does add a nice touch! The organic basil is what I bought in the produce department at Jewel on a whim. After a few days of studying our cat to see if she would destroy it (this one was chosen as I knew basil is non-toxic to cats, and I love its smell and flavor!), my husband Ron said we needed to get it a proper pot. So, we found pot at Home Depot and got a small bag of potting soil to go with it. I think we spent about $15. Add the basil itself, and we’re talking $20.

Since we have a house now, we’re still negotiating on what we want outside for landscaping. An herb garden in the back may be our compromise. I’m big on cooking, and when it comes to herb gardens, they certainly have lots of options. So many herbs are perennial (meaning they come back every year), easy to care for and are just plain pretty! Garlic, thyme and lavender are delicious, dry easily for storage and have delicate, tiny flowers to compliment any deck and hanging basket.

Remember, renters need to consult with their landlords and property managers before adding anything to common areas, including baskets on decks. So if you’re not sure if the Mom in your life has permission, maybe like what I pictured would be the way to go over bringing an apple tree to plant in the back yard!

And yes, if you can’t make it to see the Mom in your life in person, at least send her a card or call her. She will appreciate it more than you can imagine.
