Surprise! I’m talking about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Drive! Chicago has the honor of being the first of many cities across the country to have a street named after the Black 1960s activist. After an unanimous vote by Chicago City Counsel on July 31, 1968, pictured (from the Illinois Digital Archives) shows one of the numerous posts that had their names changed along what was then South Park Avenue. It stretches over 14 miles from McCormick Place on south, with thriving businesses, beautiful homes, and notable residents!
With Dr. King’s birthday being remembered on Monday, and Black History Month just a couple weeks away, I felt it important to share some information folks may not have learned before.

Gorgeous old homes from the Gilded Age still exist along King Drive (and neighboring streets like Michigan Avenue and Prairie), many notably in the Bronzeville and Hyde Park neighborhoods. My favorite is the Hammer/Palmer Mansion located at 3654 S Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Unfortunately, it sold in 2004 after Mr. Palmer passed away, and since then, not much care has been put into it. Preservation is being sought by many in the community and beyond!
