Surprise! I’m talking about Father’s Day, and its connection to Sears Roebuck & Co (because us natives still call it the Sears Tower, doncha know!) In the not-too-distant past, Sears was the go-to retail store for many Americans, with 350,000 employees worldwide. A big thanks goes to the famous Sears Catalog, which can be construed as a precursor to Amazon. The building itself, which started construction in 1970 and finished in 1974, was the tallest building in the world at the time and accommodated 13,000 employees – and that was back when even minimum wage was more in line with the basic cost of living, and back when Sears was known for decent benefits (including pension). It’s amazing to think how one building, representing one company, can directly touch the lives of so many people.
And too, Sears itself was especially popular with folks who enjoyed working with their hands, since they carried CRAFTSMAN® tools, and they’re still known for their lifetime warranty (People can still bring in old, damaged tools, or even buy them at garage sales, and exchange them for new ones). So between the ties and tools, and yes, the grills, too, when it came to getting gifts for Dad, Sears was the place to go!
While Sears is all but a memory anymore, to me, it’s one of those businesses, with strong ties to Chicago, that I will always think about when I think of Father’s Day (and dads as a whole). It’s sad to think that now we’re in Phase 5 and things are truly getting back to normal, we can’t really go to Sears 🙁
