Surprise! I really am talking about the so-called “Fountain of Youth” that you can find in the south section of Schiller Woods – on Irving Park Road just west of Cumberland. You’ll be able to easily find it, since people have been lining up for decades since the pump was installed back in the 40s. It’s free, and it comes up from an oldschool pump from an aquafer about 80ft below the surface. It’s so popular there’s even a Facebook group dedicated to it.
Some folks don’t like the “city water” coming out of their taps, because while it’s fresh water from Lake Michigan, it’s treated with things like chlorine and fluoride. (And yes, some folks point out the irony of many believers bottling their water in plastic jugs, but whatever.) The water from this pump has a bit of iron in it, and we kids used to call it “egg water”, so I’m guessing there’s trace amounts of some eggy-smelling minerals in there, too. Nevertheless, this water has a following going back several generations!
Now I can’t say for sure whether or not the water that comes from this specific pump (or maybe it’s the pump itself?) has any kind of magical properties… because there’s plenty of others in the woods that aren’t busy! But, it’s free, and many people love the way it tastes, so it’s one of those “if it works, it works!” kind of deals. Cheers!
