Surprise! I’m talking about Chicago’s fascinating history with tied houses, which, interestingly enough, is partly responsible for Prohibition! We all know various stories about gangsters from a hundred years ago, many romanticized, but what led up to it isn’t as often discussed. I feel it’s important to examine the whys when it comes to history so we know what to do and what not to do!
The City, pressured by the Temperance Movement, was fed up with the many issues with alcoholism, especially spousal abuse. Instead of curbing the base issue (which hardworking folks like WINGS are still very much dealing with over a century later!), politicians figured a win-win would make it expensive to run bars. Bar owners, facing these pricey permit hurdles, contacted breweries for financial help in order to stay in business. The breweries, with Schlitz being a prominent benefactor, were all too eager to step up, and they began constructing tied houses for the owners. The catch was they could only sell their brand of beer- no other beers, and no other alcohol.
Now true, these tied houses were indeed beautiful pieces of architecture, and some are still in existence today. (It could be considered a case of separating the art from the artist, in a matter of speaking.) They have survived well past Prohibition itself, and some are serving up drinks!
