Did you know… ? February, 2021

Surprise! I’m talking about Pulaski Road (and I was standing right at Pulaski and Devon- right where it changes to Crawford)! Pulaski Road is named in honor of Casimir Pulaski, a Revolutionary War hero who also has an Illinois state holiday each year on the first Monday in March. Change wasn’t an immediate thing, however, as there were several folks from Team Crawford, as in Crawford Avenue, who had several somethings to say about it!

It’s no surprise Chicago, and the State of Illinois, honors a Polish hero, since the Chicago metropolitan area is the largest Polish metropolitan area outside of Poland.

Since the Chicago area has quite a number of folks who claim Polish ancestry, including first generation, Polish foods and customs are naturally popular, and folks don’t need to be Polish to enjoy and appreciate them.

While we don’t have colorful parades on Fat Tuesday like they do in New Orleans, the day before Ash Wednesday does have something special. Allow me to introduce you to a Polish treat that’s like a donut on steroids. And it’s so perfect, it’s even got it’s own special day! Yep, I’m talking about Paczki Day!
