It’s famously dyed green every year for St. Patrick’s Day, and the “Chicago bricks” are sourced from its clay. Even the Municipal Device is designed around it.
However, folks like me who grew up in the city are aware of its problems, too. When I was a kid, I was told to never go in the river, because it was like swimming in a toilet. Sadly, that was a fair comparison once upon a time. But the folks with Friends of the Chicago River are changing that, and they’ve made a lot of headway!
“Since 1979, Friends has been working to improve the health of the Chicago River system for the benefit of people, plants and animals; and by doing so, has laid the foundation for the river to be a beautiful, continuous, and easily accessible corridor of open space in the Chicago region.“
