Surprise! I’m talking about the Chicago River itself! (You thought I was talking about the bridge, didn’t ya?) Besides the skyline, the river, and it’s moving bridges, is a big part of Chicago’s identity. It’s famously dyed green every year for St. Patrick’s Day, and the “Chicago bricks” are sourced from its clay. Even the Municipal Device is designed around it.
However, folks like me who grew up in the city are aware of its problems, too. When I was a kid, I was told to never go in the river, because it was like swimming in a toilet. Sadly, that was a fair comparison once upon a time. But the folks with Friends of the Chicago River are changing that, and they’ve made a lot of headway!
“Since 1979, Friends has been working to improve the health of the Chicago River system for the benefit of people, plants and animals; and by doing so, has laid the foundation for the river to be a beautiful, continuous, and easily accessible corridor of open space in the Chicago region.“
If you are available, Chicago River Day is an annual clean-up day they host – just a few weeks away! You don’t have to live in the city to be connected to the river – the north fork is all the way up by me! In fact, a cleanup location is pretty much in my back yard.
Did you know I do residential sales and leasing, and I can help you find a great home, investment property, buyer, or tenant? My current listings are on my website! And if I can’t help you personally, did you know I can refer you to a fellow REALTOR® anywhere across the country? If you have a real estate-related question, I make it my mission to get it answered!

Did you know the south fork of the south branch of the Chicago River (“Bubbly Creek”), is still bubbling up methane and hydrogen sulfide gases from the stockyards that closed decades ago? Gross! But it’s getting better!
With so many Earth Day events and celebrations going on, I thought it was only fitting to point out all the hard work folks have done over the past several decades to reclaiming our vital resource! Thank you!
