Courtesy WGN: Experimental islands create new habitats to transform the Chicago River

Surprise! I’m talking about the Chicago River itself! (You thought I was talking about the bridge, didn’t ya?) Besides the skyline, the river, and it’s moving bridges, is a big part of Chicago’s identity. It’s famously dyed green every year for St. Patrick’s Day, and the “Chicago bricks” are sourced from its clay. Even the Municipal Device is designed around it.

Sadly, that was a fair comparison once upon a time. But the folks with Friends of the Chicago River are changing that, and they’ve made a lot of headway!

Since 1979, Friends has been working to improve the health of the Chicago River system for the benefit of people, plants and animals; and by doing so, has laid the foundation for the river to be a beautiful, continuous, and easily accessible corridor of open space in the Chicago region.

Did you know the south fork of the south branch of the Chicago River (“Bubbly Creek”), is still bubbling up methane and hydrogen sulfide gases from the stockyards that closed decades ago? Gross! But it’s getting better!
